SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 4, 2025) — The San Antonio Housing Trust Foundation, a 501(c)(3) is pleased to announce that it has executed a purchase and sale agreement with the current owner of the historic Robert E. Lee Apartments, marking a significant step toward preserving affordable housing in the heart of downtown San Antonio.
“I’m thrilled the San Antonio Housing Trust has the historic Robert E. Lee building under contract to ensure the property stays affordable for residents in District 1. Over the past year and a half, my team and I have worked closely with residents through serious challenges, so we know how much this acquisition means. I’m proud to have advocated for this as a member of the SAHT Board and will continue to do so until the rehab is complete,” said District 1 City Councilwoman Sukh Kaur.
“We are excited to have an opportunity to acquire and improve this historic downtown building while ensuring the residents will have a great place to call home for a very long time,” said Pete Alanis, Executive Director of the San Antonio Housing Trust Foundation. “I want to thank District 1 City Councilwoman Sukh Kaur for her leadership. She was a calming voice in our engagement with residents while supporting us in our efforts.”
The Housing Trust hopes to take ownership in July and will begin plans for renovations to ensure the long-term viability of the residential building. The property has long served as a critical source of affordable housing for low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities. The Housing Trust intends to continue that mission while working closely with the current ownership group to ensure a smooth transition and thoughtful rehabilitation of the property.
“This agreement ensures that one of downtown’s most affordable multifamily communities will remain accessible to the people who need it most,” said Alanis. “We are committed to maintaining the stability and dignity of all current residents.”
